Your feet play such an important role in your life! They keep you on-the-go; whether it be running errands, exercising, travelling or chasing after little ones. You use your feet everyday, so it pays to get to know them and look after them. 

Get to know your feet

Feet are surprisingly complex! Each foot has 26 bones, 30 joints and more than 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons working together to support your bodyweight and propel you forward. 

A key ligament in the foot (and one that you’re probably familiar with!) is the plantar fascia. This ligament runs from your heel to your toes on each foot and forms the arch of your foot. Your plantar fascia ligament provides strength to your foot structure, supporting your forward step propulsion and assisting with balance.

The two main arches running lengthwise down the foot, created by the plantar fascia ligament, are called the medial (inside) and the lateral (outside) arches. These integral structures are supported by surrounding tendons, ligaments and tarsal and metatarsal bones. 

Our arches have evolved to function like springs - absorbing the shock from repetitive impact and propelling us forward with every step, keeping us balanced and adapting to a variety of terrains and activities.

As you can imagine, protecting and supporting our arches with proper footwear and podiatric advice is vital to keeping you active and healthy throughout your life.

Elements of supportive footwear

The easiest way to protect your feet is to wear the right footwear.

Look for options with plenty of structure (not too twist-y!), that will align your feet into the optimal position. Klouds and Silver Lining footwear feature a ¾ stabilising shank built into the outsole for this purpose. 

Styles with in-built arch support, or the option to insert your own arch support insoles are another great option to keep you and your feet healthy and happy. Many Klouds and Silver Lining styles feature arch support built into the shoe or insole (like the Klouds Arch Comfort Zone Insole!), and most styles are orthotic friendly so you can insert your orthoses if required.

Cushioning is essential to support and protect our plantar fascia ligament. Good footwear will have a decent sole to keep you up and off the hard ground, and should incorporate memory foam, rubber or PU to absorb shock. Most Klouds and Silver Lining footwear is crafted with PU outsoles, filled with millions of tiny air bubbles to cushion every step. Several of our styles have rubber soles, another great option to absorb shock, and our Arch Comfort Zone Insole is packed from heel-to-toe with memory foam!
